Monitor is the most important component of a computer. It is where the quality of performance of the system will be reflected. Even if all other components of the computer hardware such as CPU or hard disc unit are of superior quality, monitor is the most visible face of the gadget to tell the user that the system is perfect or not. Any deficiency in the performance of the monitor will be counter productive despite other advantages of the system. Monitor receives signals from the hard disk and form images of text and graphics. The size as well as the quality of the monitor is very important for a user as they are closely related to the nature of work to be executed in the computer. Generally there are two types of monitors in vogue today. The cathode ray tube (CRT) and the liquid crystal display (LCD) are those which are widely used.

Then there is plasma monitor which is almost like LCD in appearance but is based on a different technology. Conventional CRT is massive, but it is cheaper than others. LCD and Plasma are sleek and thin which are considered as space saving devices. Among them LCD is more popular when it comes to computer monitors due to its energy efficiency and other technical advantages. However for special reasons CRT monitors are preferred by professionals for their exceptional color range when it comes to graphics oriented jobs. CRT can manipulate with wide range of resolutions, different refresh rates and can offer innumerable colors. It features better contrast ratios also. Above all CRT monitors are robust and very durable for basic users to depend on.

The choice of the monitor depends on factors like space available, nature of requirements and cost factor. Low end users who need the computer only for basic uses like surfing the internet or sending emails can opt for CRT which is much cheaper than other alternatives. But for reasons mentioned already, LCD monitors are widely preferred for their compactness, style and sharp or crisp images they offer. While choosing LCD monitors there are certain factors to be considered. The first and foremost is the resolution which represents the number of pixels on the screen. A unique characteristic of LCD is that it will have a native resolution and therefore can offer comfortable viewing experience. The native resolution range from 1024 x 768 to 1600 x 1200. The next factor is the aspect ratio. Most of the LCD monitors come with aspect ratio of 16: 9 and 16:10 which are widescreen formats. Consequently LCD monitors are well suited for watching movies or fast moving sequences. Response time is another important factor especially when the monitor is used for gaming or fast moving program. Some of the LCD monitors will have 2 or 3 ms of response time. Most LCD monitors come with feature like inputs for DVI connections.

Latest development in the LCD technology is the LED backlighting. Monitors with this innovative character are now becoming popular. The main reasons are the superior color reproduction capability and contrast ratio. Further this new technology help the product to become the most energy efficient monitor available in the contemporary market. As all leading manufacturers have introduced their computer monitors in the markets, the consumers have no problems in choosing appropriate ones according to their relevant needs. Internet is the best source to locate them.
