IQAir is a well-respected Indoor Air Quality Education Partner of the American Lung Association, supported by the ALA President as a company that shares the same passion for protecting the public from polluted indoor air and the IQAir GC multi-gas air purifier defines a standard reflecting this commitment with its mechanical, safe and mechanical particle filtration.
Our review of the GC Multigas Air Purifier, IQAir’s flagship machine for multiple chemical sensors, volatile organic compounds, gas and odor filtration, demonstrates consumer air purification that straddles the line between machines industrial and commercial. WHY IT’S A TOP PICK: One of the best air purifiers for VOCs and smoke that consumers can buy.
Price: $1299 on Amazon
Model: GC Multigas
Summary: The IQAir GC multi-gas air purifier is a very pure and mechanical air purifier that uses medical grade HEPA and multi-cylinder activated carbon filters to remove allergens, dust, pollen, gases , smoke and VOCs from the air.
What We Liked
- Simple control elements that remove guesswork
- No ozone output
- Heavy-duty carbon filtration
- Sturdy machine (you can easily see why this unit costs $1299)
What We Didn’t
- A little too bulky – users unable to perform their own maintenance may require assistance
- No smart features – control only available at the machine itself
IQAir GC Multigas Air Purifier Specifications
|IQAir GC Multigas Air Purifier|
|Max Coverage||1125 Sq Ft|
|Max Noise||63 dB|
|Max Electrical Consumption||400 Watts|
The IQAir GC multi-gas air purifier is well protected in several layers of plastic wrapping and styrofoam with its user manual, quick start instructions, test certifications and its authenticity information at the top of the box. Once removed from the shipping container, the air purifier makes a bold statement that other machines will struggle to compete. It looks like something you would see in a medical practice – not necessarily a bad thing if you value indoor air quality. The blue support struts operate vertically along both sides of the purification structure and can be removed out of the place to remove the substructures of the filter housing in the unit. The swivel wheels are supplied with the device and can be installed to facilitate the relocation of the very large machine.
Want the best air purifier for smoke and VOC removal in your home? This is one of the best.
The IQAir GC Multigas Air Purifier is designed for large areas requiring a powerful purifier to eliminate smoke, gas and the heaviest VOCs from the air. For rooms with a size of 1,125 square feet, the machine passes through air in a patented HyperHEPA IQAir GC Multigas pre-filter (located at the bottom of the unit in a removable tray), through multiple carbon cylinders which eliminates VOCs and odors, a secondary stage of coal filters that checks by chemicals to destroy harmful chemicals in the air such as formaldehyde and finally by a post-filter sleeve that prevents activated carbon particles from s escape from the air that is returned to the treated environment.
Watch this video from an IQAir president demonstrating the effectiveness of a HealthPro Plus model (a step below GC Multigas in terms of its smoke filtering capability) with smoke grenades:
The purifier measures 28 “(h) x 16” (w) x 15 “(d) and can fit comfortably in most living spaces although we recommend having a chosen area prior to setting up the purifier In our tests, we found that our participants preferred to use this machine in a large room or kitchen.

This is a relatively lightweight machine compared to other comparable air cleaners we examined (29 lbs versus Austin Air’s Healthmate at 45 lbs), but because of its volume, most of these benefits are lost.
Side locking mechanisms secure filter housings.
Replacing the filter is relatively simple. The blue spacers on each side of the machine will stop out of place to remove the top cover of the activated carbon filter box and unlock the lower tray with the HyperHEPA filter. Expect about 7,000 hours of use (almost one year) of filter assemblies before you need to replace. The IQAir GC Series replacement filters for this machine and other IQAir models can be found on its site.
Total Estimated Annual Maintenance and Operating Costs: $656
IQAir GC Multigas Air Purifier cartridges must be replaced at the same time as the post-filter sleeves (the white wraps around the cylindrical cartridges) and the HyerHEPA filter to ensure that the purification of the air is not inhibited by a bottleneck.
Four activated carbon and chemisorption filters treat polluted air – the nearest to industrial-grade for consumers that we’ve seen
IQAir’s HyperHEPA filter is a medical-grade filter which adsorps particulate like dust, pollen, and pet dander. The GC Multigas is the first machine we’ve seen that uses a HEPA filter as its pre-filter.

The GC Multigas user interface is simple to use and offers a variety of options for planning air purification cycles. We have taken pictures below on some control screens, but if you are looking for a more thorough solution to a control problem, we suggest you consult the IQAir GC Multigas manual here.
A simple control interface that allows airflow speed setting adjustments.
The interface allows users to set an automatic timer for a more hands-off option.
Scheduling allows users to set up a weekly run time so that they can go about their regular lives and interact with the machine less often.
The control unit screen when the machine is powered down and awaiting a command either from a scheduled setting, or manually.
The physical interface of the unit is direct. A power button does what it takes and turns the device on and off when pressed. A selection button to the right of the power button allows users to navigate through the menus. The menu button returns users to the previous menu. And the Enter button allows users to enter and select desired settings, or pre-programmed control functions.
To the right of the LCD screen, a unit diagram shows the filter lifetime according to the LED color indicators (green, orange and red representing three levels of performance).
IQAir HealthPro Plus vs GC Multigas
As shown in the video above, IQAir’s HealthPro Plus is very capable of removing smoke from an environment – so what is the big difference between these two IQAir products?
These are mainly active carbon filter assemblies. GC Multigas is a beast when it comes to adsorbing toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds from the air it processes. I worked in industrial environments that require massive air adsorbers to treat the air entering the electric control rooms and I can tell you without hesitation, the assembly of this thing is the closest I have seen on an industrial machine. If you need air purification at home or in the office, it is for anything other than VOCs and smoke, GC Multigas is the unit you want.
Overall, the Air Purifier IQ Air GC Multigas is an excellent machine that deserves a place among the best performing quality air purifiers on the market today. We strongly recommend this purifier for family rooms, large rooms or kitchens that want an air filter for the medical control of allergens, dusts, pollen, gases and VOCs. This machine works equally well in doctors’ offices.
Expect to spend about $ 376 every 7,000 hours on filter replacements. The power consumption varies depending on the speed setting of the fan, but expects consumption to reach about 400 Watts. At 7,000 hours, expect that power consumption costs about $ 280 per year (using a figure of $ 0.10 per kWh).
IQAir manufactures some of the best air purifiers on the market, testing each purifier independently before shipping the manufacturing facility to ensure that systems meet strict air purification specifications.
The IQAir GC multi-gas air purifier is a superior choice of Gadget Review for any consumer who is looking to buy a large, powerful and efficient air purifier for his home or office.
